Question: Does the pH of soil change from residential areas compared to public areas (LBA Park)?
Hypothesis: The pH of the soil in the residential area will lean more to the neutral scale than the public LBA park soil since it has been exposed to fertilizers and in the yard being tested, roses are one of the many varied plants that grow (roses prefer acidic to neutral soil conditions) which could suggest slightly more acidic conditions. The pH of the soil at LBA park will be even more acidic because of how many dogs are walked at the park and their urine probably makes the soil more acidic. In addition, trees surrounding the park produce leaf litter which break down and make the soil more acidic.
Materials: pH soil meter, soil from front yard, soil from back yard, soil from LBA Park
Procedure: 1. Gather Materials
2. Prepare pH soil meter
3. Clean pH soil meter w/ green paper
4. Test pH of back yard soil
5. Test pH of front yard soil
6. Test pH of LBA park soil
7. Record data for each soil sample
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for four days
9. Analyze data
Controlled Variables: pH soil meter
Dependent Variables: pH of soil
Independent Variables: Location of soil samples
Data:
Back Yard
pH 1: 5.5
pH 2: 6
pH 3: 6.5
pH 4: 5
Average: 5.8
Front Yard
pH 1: 7
pH 2: 6.5
pH 3: 7
pH 4: 7
Average: 6.9
LBA Park
pH 1: 6
pH 2: 7
pH 3: 6.5
pH 4: 6
Average: 6.4
